He has not met Mozart but is thrilled to learn Mozart is in Vienna for a performance. The young Salieri, a devout Catholic who has vowed to dedicate his life to composing music in the name of God, is a favorite of the Royal Court. The story turns backward in time to 1781. Now an elderly man in a wheelchair, Salieri speaks directly to the audience and begins to explain the story behind the rumors. The play opens in Vienna, November 1823, where whispers and rumors are rampant that Antonio Salieri, once the famed director of the Italian opera and a favorite of Emperor Joseph II, has admitted to murdering Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart thirty-two years prior. AMADEUS CAST FOR FREE
You can watch Amadeus for free on the National Theatre’s YouTube channel at 7pm on Thursday, 16 July, then on demand for one week until 7pm on Thursday 23 July, but you’ll need to start watching by 4pm on 23 July to see it all. The production ran at the National from October 2016 to March 2017, and the theatre brought it back for a second run from January to April 2018. It also features live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia. Hugh Sachs plays Count Franz Orsini-Rosenberg, Geoffrey Beevers is Baron Gottfried Van Swieten, Fleur de Bray is Katherina Cavalieri, and Wendy Dawn Thompson plays Teresa Salieri.

Joining Mr Msamati and Mr Gillen on stage are Karla Crome as Constanze Weber (later Mozart), Sarah Amankwah and Hammed Animashaun as Venticelli, Tom Edden as Joseph II, and Alexandra Mathie as Count Johann Kilian Von Strack. Last year Mr Gillen was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Olivier Awards, and has played Liam in the ITV hit series Benidorm, and Brian in the Channel 4 comedy Fresh Meat. Mr Msamati is best known for playing Salladhor Saan in HBO series Game of Thrones, and he was the first black actor to play Iago at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2015 production of Othello.
